What is a Certified Professional Guardian (CPG)?

A Guardian is one who is formally and legally appointed by the Superior Court to act for a person whom the court has found to be incapacitated and unable to care for their own needs. Guardianship services are needed when no other viable alternatives are available for a person who has become incapable of managing his or her own financial and/or personal affairs.

Guardianship is a legal intervention that includes case management, advocacy, care supervision and financial management. A Guardian may oversee and coordinate an array of services for the incapacitated person’s benefit. The Guardian advocates for the individual's financial protection, safety and well-being, using substituted judgment and the best interests of the incapacitated person within the bounds of the law.

When is a Guardian Needed?

If a person is unable to manage their personal care or finances and there is no family member willing or able to be a decision maker, that person may require a professional Guardian to be appointed. This is particularly important if there is property or assests that need to be protected from exploitation.
